Walk into any Turkish oud workshop and you will encounter an opinion about wood within five minutes. The walnut-versus-rosewood debate can occupy an afternoon. The question of spruce versus cedar for the soundboard can divide a room. And underneath every conversation runs an assumption so widely shared it usually goes unspoken: that the wood makes the instrument.
But does it? And if so — how, and how much? The honest answer is more interesting than either the romantic version (every wood has a soul) or the cynical one (it's all marketing). The physical differences between wood species are real and measurable, and they do shape the sound. At the same time, human hearing is complicated, expectation bias is powerful, and the luthier's hands matter at least as much as the lumber. What Makes a Wood Sound the Way It Does
Before comparing species, it helps to know which physical properties of wood matter acoustically. Luthiers and instrument acousticians keep coming back to the same short list.
Density. How much a given volume of the wood weighs. A denser piece takes more energy to set in motion, and it reflects vibration differently than a light one. Soundboards want to be light; reflective backs and bowls can afford to be heavy.
Stiffness. How strongly the wood resists bending. What matters most for a soundboard is not stiffness alone but stiffness relative to weight. Woods that are unusually stiff for how little they weigh — spruce is the famous example — vibrate freely and turn string energy into sound efficiently. This is why the same few species dominate the tops of ouds, violins, and guitars alike.
Damping. How quickly the wood swallows vibration and turns it into heat. Low-damping woods ring when you tap them and support long, clear sustain. Higher-damping woods sound warmer and more muted, with a softer attack. Cut and grain. Soundboard Woods: Spruce, Cedar, Mahogany

Spruce: the bright standard

Cedar: the warm alternative

Mahogany and other tops

Bowl Woods: Walnut, Rosewood, Maple, Ebony
The bowl (tekne) is built from thin ribs of hardwood bent and glued around a mold. Unlike the soundboard, the bowl is not primarily a radiating surface — its job is to enclose the resonant air cavity and reflect the energy the top produces. That is why most luthiers and players agree the bowl shapes the sound less than the top does. Walnut: the Turkish classic

Rosewood: denser and more brilliant
Rosewood bowls appear on higher-end Turkish and especially Arabic ouds. It also carries prestige and visual drama. One practical caution: several rosewood species are CITES-regulated, which can complicate international trade. Maple and ebony
Maple, the wood of violin backs, gives a focused, clear tone with good projection and a crisp attack — a favorite for ensemble instruments. Ebony bowls exist on prestige ouds, and their extreme density pushes brightness and projection further still, at the cost of real weight on your leg. Neck and Fingerboard: Function First
Neck and fingerboard woods are chosen mostly for structure, not tone. The neck must stay straight under string tension for decades, so makers reach for light, stable woods — cedar is a traditional Turkish choice, mahogany common on Arabic builds. The fingerboard is a different story, and here one wood rules: ebony.
