五種著名中東樂器：烏德琴、卡農琴、奈伊笛、達耶雷鼓與布祖基琴

烏德琴（Oud）
烏德琴通常有五組複弦，再加一條單弦，共十一條弦；現代琴弦常搭配尼龍與纏弦使用。弦軸箱向後彎折，配置十一支弦軸。它的琴身呈圓潤梨形，正面是薄木製面板。過去常以鷹羽製成撥片，如今多使用塑膠或其他合成材料。面板上的音孔通常由一個大音孔與兩個小音孔構成，負責讓琴身共鳴向外傳遞。
要獲得飽滿、柔和且反應靈敏的聲音，面板尤其重要。優質烏德琴多採用充分乾燥的雲杉，面板不能過厚，才能讓琴弦振動有效傳至琴身並形成共鳴。選購時，面板用料、厚度與製作工藝都值得優先檢查。
卡農琴（Qanun）
卡農琴是一種以撥片演奏的箱形齊特琴，常見型號約有 24 至 27 組弦程，每組通常配置三條同音弦。演奏者在兩手食指戴上指環與撥片；傳統撥片可使用角、骨等材料製成。琴身一側設有覆皮的琴橋區，琴弦從弦栓延伸至另一側，並由弦栓完成基本調音。不同長度的琴弦帶來不同音高與音色。土耳其式卡農琴另有精密的 mandal 小扳鍵，可在演奏中快速微調音高。
卡農琴廣泛用於土耳其、阿拉伯世界及中東其他地區。古埃及與蘇美文化中可見其遠祖類型的弦樂器；後世的結構與演奏系統則經過漫長演變，才形成今日所見的卡農琴。
奈伊笛（Ney）
奈伊笛是一種端吹蘆笛，正面通常有六個指孔，背面有一個拇指孔。演奏者透過指法、吹氣角度與氣息控制，取得不同音高與細膩的音色變化。
奈伊笛依尺寸與基準音高分為多種規格，通常以帶有自然節結的蘆葦製作，指孔則以傳統工具精確開出。管身越短，音域通常越高；較低沉的型號需要更多氣息支撐。土耳其傳統中，奈伊笛演奏者稱為 neyzen。
達耶雷鼓（Dayereh）
達耶雷鼓（Dayereh／Dayareh）是伊朗傳統與古典波斯音樂，以及亞塞拜然音樂中的重要框鼓，也常出現在慶典與民間娛樂。它有圓形木框，框內裝有金屬環片或小鈴；演奏時，鼓皮的敲擊聲與金屬聲相互交織。傳統鼓面多使用山羊皮，不同地區的尺寸、結構與音色各有差異，亞塞拜然式達耶雷通常具有較深沉的聲響。演奏者可運用手指、掌面及晃動動作組合出多層次節奏。
布祖基琴（Bouzouki）
布祖基琴是源自希臘的長頸撥弦魯特琴。外形與曼陀林有些相似，具有圓背木製琴身，金屬弦通常分成三組或四組複弦排列在有品指板上。演奏時，左手在指板上按弦，右手以撥片在音孔附近撥弦。它的聲音明亮而穿透力強，兼具長頸魯特琴的清晰度與希臘音樂特有的表情。布祖基琴也十分重視外觀，琴面常以珍珠母貝及各式圖紋裝飾。
布祖基琴是 Rebetiko 音樂文化的核心樂器之一，也發展出用於愛爾蘭傳統音樂的版本。常見的珍珠母貝鑲嵌除了裝飾，也成為許多製琴師辨識度鮮明的工藝特色；演奏時使用撥片。
布祖基琴大致可分為三類：Trichordo 配有三組複弦；Tetrachordo 配有四組複弦；愛爾蘭布祖基琴通常也有四組複弦，但採用平背琴身。

I recently saw a young man playing middle eastern instrument on something I’d never seen before and would Like to know if you could help. The body looked a bit like an Oud with a very short neck. It sat on the lap and a series of oblong buttons that Controlled the tones / notes when pressed. I could not see
Close enough to count the strings but appeared double stringed like a mandola. The oddest feature was a wheel on its side, attached to the end of the belly of the instrument and instead of picking or strumming the strings they twirled the wheel and it produced the sound but, like peddles on a piano you could soften or
sustain the sound with the manipulation of the turning wheel. Do you know what this is called? I would like to get and
